Dimensional Results

Dimensional Results

The Dimensional Results section of a PPAP submission provides documented evidence that the finished part meets all dimensional requirements defined in the Design Record.

This section records the actual measurements taken from production parts and demonstrates that the supplier can consistently manufacture parts that conform to customer specifications.

What Dimensional Results include

Dimensional results should cover every applicable characteristic identified on the design drawing, including but not limited to:

  • Length, width, and height
  • Diameters and radii
  • Angles and profiles
  • Thickness and flatness
  • Geometric tolerances (GD&T), where specified

Each characteristic must be clearly referenced to the ballooned Design Record and recorded with actual measured values.

Verification and sign-off

All measurements should be:

  • Taken using approved and validated measurement systems
  • Recorded clearly and accurately
  • Marked as conforming or nonconforming against specification limits

A complete dimensional report confirms that every requirement has been checked, not just a sample selection.

Handling nonconformances and exceptions

If any measured values do not meet specification, the supplier must clearly document the issue. Where a nonconformance is:

  • Understood
  • Approved
  • Expected to continue into mass production

An exception or deviation report should be created and included in the PPAP submission.

This report should:

  • Identify the affected characteristic(s)
  • Explain the cause of the abnormal readings
  • Reference any approved engineering deviation or temporary waiver

Unexplained or undocumented dimensional nonconformances are a common cause of PPAP rejection.

Key considerations

  • Dimensional results must reflect production-intent parts
  • All characteristics on the design record must be addressed
  • Results must align with MSA, Control Plan, and PFMEA
  • Approved exceptions must be fully traceable

Dimensional Results provide clear, objective evidence that the part meets design intent and is ready for production approval.
